Gene Steinmeyer, Owner

In 2002, Gene Steinmeyer and Marissa Maaske held the first event The Hoop N Surf Classic for five NCAA II women's basketball teams. Steinmeyer needed an affordable event in our 50th state and Marissa, a physical therapist in Honolulu, did the leg work to make that first basketball event in 2002 successful.
Five NCAA II women's basketball teams played in that first Hoop N Surf Classic. Many years have come and gong since that first event. The Hawaii experience has expanded to most divisions of men's and women's basketball. In many of those years, mainland men's and women's soccer teams have spent part of their pre-season bounding in paradise.

I know the importance of travel for collegiate athletic teams. I spent 28 years coaching college women's basketball at Doane College and Northwest Missouri State. The magical effect it has on your players is enough to make the trip worthwhile. The recruiting edge you gain by telling prospective recruits they will be spending time in Hawaii is invaluable.

Marissa Maaske was an All-American point guard for me at Doane College. Marissa and I worked together to put the event together. I would talk to coaches, setting our playing field. Marissa would put together the lodging, transportation and game planning in Hawaii.

At the end of 2010-2011 season, I retired as a head coach at Northwest Missouri State University. My career is now running our sports travel business, Malika Sport Tours. Marissa's physical therapy career has expanded and she is now in administration. I will take over managing every phase of the trip, often with an assist from Marissa.

College teams from almost every mainland state have competed in events hosted by Malika Sport Tours. Five women's teams used the Hoop N Surf Classic as a springboard to the national championship in their respective divisions the same year.
